2003

I don't know how I missed this last April 22, but 2003 is the ten-year anniversary of the release of
NCSA Mosaic, the first practical, graphical World Wide Web browser. All browsers since, including Netscape Navigator, Internet Explorer, Safari, etc. tip their hats to Mosaic. It ushered in a literal revolution in how people lived and worked with computers.
I still have a copy of Mosaic for Macintosh from about 1994 on a floppy disk at my parents' house. Hell, I even remember the first website I ever visited: it was some ska music web page. I with hanging around my old roommate Layla Sullivan. We were blown away at the potential even back then.
Mosaic was the browser I used when attempted my first clumsy stabs at creating my first web page. "Shawn's Hockey Homepage" it was called, and basically consisted of a bunch of pictures of Ed Belfour centered on the page. That's it.
Ah, geek memories.

I got kinda sick of seeing the horrific Game 7 reminder up here. The Sox have scarred me once again. Fortunately, the pain was lessened somewhat by a kick-ass 19-13 OT victory by the New England Patriots over the Miami Dolphins yesterday. Squish the fish! The win put them in first place in the AFC East. You like the logo I used? I prefer it to the newer one.
Back to the Red Sox for a second. I was seven when they blew it in 1986, and I cried like a little girl. It was that year I started watching hockey, and never really looked back. I had kind of forced myself to pay no attention to baseball or the Sox. Watching these playoff series' brought back all the feelings of why I used to like baseball so much. I liken the Red Sox to a girlfriend that cheats and I, the fan, as the no self-esteem guy who keeps putting up with it. You did it to me again, Red Sox. I'll never trust you again.
What's that? You...you want me back? You're sorry?
sniffle You better not be fooling...

It just doesn't get any bigger than this. After another back-against-the-wall victory against the
Evil Empire, The Red Sox are within one victory of returning to the World Series since 1986. (I don't want to hear any comments about how that turned out, Spankee fans.)
Tonight. Game 7 of the ALCS. Petey vs. The Rocket. It oughtta be great. All I can say is:
YANKEES SUCK!

2003 ALCS Game 1: Red Sox - 5, Yankees - 2. That's a good way to start off the series. Playing at Yankee Stadium, against Mike Mussina. Johnny Damon sitting out with a cuncussion. Boston's number one and number two starting pitchers not scheduled until after Game 1, with the knuckleballer Time Wakefield making the start. Sounds like a recipe for an easy Yankee 1-0 series lead doesn't it?
Think again.
Wakefield pitched a gem (two runs on two sweak singles through six-plus innings). David Ortiz and Todd Walker jacked taters, and good defense was played in the field. Now, the Yankees have to face Derek Lowe today, and Pedro Martinez in game three. Things are looking good for Red Sox Nation.
The shoe has forseen it.
After the Cubs trounced the Marlins in game two of the NLCS 12-3, we are another step closer to a Cubs-Sox World Series. Of course that would be a sign of the apocolypse, so head for high ground.
